BUTT SPENCER

Butt Spencer circa 2001 em My Photos por

Genre(s): Poppy Punk / Funny Metal

Formed in Joinville - SC, 1995. It all began in Joinville / SC, in mid-1995, when Lauro (my brother, who was 14 at the time) and a friend (Marcelo) began rehearsing in the studio at the back of my house where the tests were rolling from my old band , The Power of the Bira. I remember at the time played NOFX, Operation Ivy, Rancid etc.. drafts and some of their own songs. Then I invited Marcelo Rodrigo, a colleague of the classroom, to play bass. Rodrigo could not play, but Marcelo convinced him that it was easy. Rodrigo appeared at the trial and before long realize that bass was not his vocation, after all failed to play a song you want. About two or three weeks later, Rodrigo Mauricio found a friend in common among them, who played bass and liked pretty much the same style of music. He wasted no time in inviting you to join the band. Anyway, had the "essential elements" for a rock band (guitar / bass / drums). Still, Rodrigo would in all trials only to watch until the day that Marcelo has some letters of covers they played, with the intention that definitely Rodrigo took over the vocals. They thus formed the first lineup of Spencer Butt, with Lauro on drums, Marcelo on guitar, Maurice on bass and Rodrigo on vocals. The songs began to emerge, several of them. Marcelo came with about four new drafts every test, always with lyrics mocking and childish, something really fun and irreverent for adolescents with an average age between 15 and 16 years. The hardcore skapunk simple and always attended the first phase of Spencer Butt, who played in at various places and earned some credibility early alternative rock scene in the city. I remember a show that made a party freshmen in EFJ (Faculty of Engineering Joinville), where "big guys" university were looking at them and commenting "putz ... this sends piazada fucking well." Soon after they recorded their first demo, live on two channels, titled "Better late than never" with 14 songs (among them stand out poor Vs Rico, viruses and Chopp'n'Center Amplifier), where good quality recording attracted considerable attention. This demo-tape records well what they were in 1996: infamous and energetic teenagers. Or, as expressed an article from a local newspaper: "Rock 'n Roll Puberty." DOWN-SKA-C-T After that, things were changing. Marcelo was putting aside the desire to play punk / hardcore and came to rehearsals with the themes there Virgins and traditional rock'n'roll, with lyrics more appealing and childlike, leaving the other members very dissatisfied. He was more than evident that Marcelo would leave the band. Quickly was replaced by Rafael Zimath, a friend who has been following for some time the band's concerts, and who knew how to play some songs from Butt. Gradually were trying to stop this once infamous and debauched side, the main feature former member Marcelo. The sound was gaining more consistency and members have acquired musical maturity. Not given up, however, still play some songs written by a former member. Some compositions of those phrases came to bother some people, to the point of questioning the stance of banda, for example: "... if you could not eat the maid." He had been become an irony, in view of the new formation. Excited about the possibility of including a horn section, the Butt Spencer added two new members, Charles "Somalia" (childhood friend Maurice) on tenor sax and John Paul (this, friend of Rodrigo) on trombone. The idea was to do something with influences from Voodoo Glow Skulls and Mighty Mighty Bosstones, bands who worshiped at the time. But rushed to register their demotape with that sound we say, more "ska". The result of the demo "Down-ska-ct", recorded in the studio Solo, in Curitiba / PR was not the best. Two of the five songs relied on the new horn section. For lack of experience and preparation, the metals were recorded semitonados, which gives the impression that they are out of tune. Another fatal mistake was to record the guitars on some songs without distortion (which I always call "sound believer"). All of consistency and aggressiveness were lost thanks banda, causing reactions in the listener very different from those generated at the shows. Moreover, this was another facet of post-banda Marcelo, with lyrics more serious, as can be seen in the song "The worst is yet to come." Reached fairly disclose this ribbon, which had a very good artwork, containing the photo on the cover of Mauritius in a show. Something very interesting, since usually the pictures are centered in the banda singer or guitarist, perhaps unwittingly, managed to break a stereotype that prevails in manjado rock. Thus began the exchange of contacts, reviews in fanzines and gigs out of town. THE WORST IS YET TO COME In 1998 entered the studio to record the record that maybe today disapprove of the entire band, entitled "Spanish dish EP". The idea was to record a sort of "anthology" of the early years of Butt Spencer. The delay in the launch, but the idea too desatualizou record and just not giving a true and clear impression of what they proposed to do at the time. As if that were not enough, various personal crises occurred. John Paul was no trombone because he wore was borrowed - actually belonged to his old school. Somalia was packed and ready to spend a year doing exchanges in Germany and, finally, in the recording studio had a series of problems that nobody could have imagined, ultimately resulting in a record poorly written. The band decided to press even so, almost two years later, as this was the only record that had hitherto available, although some songs had already gone on several compilations. Concerts in the city with rolled right climate of antipathy from the public. Some of envy, others by radicalism. Insisted on slandering and somehow boycotting the few shows the band did. There were new bands teenagers who came to make songs about evil Spencer Butt, calling an idiot who likes punk rock and ska. Others claimed that the band played "ska-punk" because it was the "pace of fashion", calling them embalistas and dressmakers. Interestingly, none of these bands and people that they intended to speak ill of them, or will play in concerts today. I personally do not believe anyone who wants to do something "for fashion", lasts more than five years, unlike those people who do not participate in any activity more connected to music or any other kind of art in general. Sometimes just the time comes to tell us who is true, and authentic art does not depreciate over the years. Without the sax Somalia, Richard is called to join the band to play the alto sax. It was soon realized that Richard had a sharper musicianship, and before long he take all the songs from Spencer Butt, and create new arrangements. Perhaps what saved the crisis this was a show that made the interior of São Paulo, with banda Enzyme of Blumenau, where they were well received, giving new excitement to their members. Enough GHOSTS 1999. Definitely, the members were others thought differently and have disliked most of terms such as ska, punk or anything like that, because they limited the banda that it intended to do. The letters had improved more than considerable, and the songs transgressed the concepts of ska or ska-punk conventional. Broken beats and arrangements appeared more "crooked", further enriching their songs. In the second half of this year, Somalia was returning from Germany and soon in the show's debut last septet, the reception was very good, in a memorable concert in Florianópolis. Far from being the banda and immature teenager who were at first lived in a very good and creative. In 2000 becomes inevitable not design a new disk. They did a few shows, but all good and well commented. The main ones were in Porto Alegre, Cricklewood, Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi. Something curious witnessed this show of Niterói, where they played as the last banda after Holly Tree of São Paulo. Most people thought the Paulistas were the last band - at least 50% of the public had retired. Who witnessed, witnessed perhaps one of the best performances of the band. The sound was good (something very difficult to achieve with metal suits), despite being a simple apparatus, and even being the last band, there were many pike and energy. Interestingly it was the only show where the audience really agitated and pogou for real. In the end, I talked to a guy with a smile on his face, I confessed to being the best concert of underground band he had ever seen. The presentation was right on time, with the wrong poster - there was their name on the poster. SUPERMAN VS. THE INDUSTRY FONOGRAPHIC Briefly, decisive years for the band to take off were 1999 and 2000, when they played what they wanted, not caring that dictates the punk scene. The sound was totally different from the sameness that prevails in said Brazilian punk scene (unless you prefer to listen to the same bands Brazilian versions of reputable gringo, not having the notion that the vast majority of these do not bring anything new). The benchmark them no longer comes over certain styles of bands emerging. Seek to influence not only in music but also in other artistic activities. A show of Butt Spencer is always very interesting to watch, always spontaneous, energetic and insane. Far from politically correct concepts and / or pre-established, Butt Spencer cares about making music, and good music. In 2001 a record finally comes out with the guy from the band, the CD with 14 songs called "Dogmas ...". There was a slight delay in finalizing the 14 songs on this disc, which was recorded in another city (Florianópolis / SC) and the members were only available to record and mix on weekends, and it was not every weekend that the studio had available time. But even with this delay was worth the wait. I believe that this album will get a good response, depleting its first run with ease. I find it very interesting that the trajectory Butt come and realize that they have an element that may miss 90% of Brazilian indie bands: the DARE. This in all aspects, from not need to follow a path that already exists (I mean bands with obvious influences), to carelessness on part of micro-sects and ghettos. Even today the public in their town is small, but who cares? I have always believed that the most important is the personal satisfaction of creating something that does not yet exist, although much of the public does not have that same underground view (well, that's another story ...). Draw your own conclusions and listen to the album or the band. If you do not want to hear, all right, after all, like Spencer Butt, I'm not an opinion maker.
